Much like the Iranian F-14s, I kinda wonder how hard it is to keep some of the obscure stuff flying?

It's Russian tech, so any peasant can fix it with a hammer.

Tough to say, a lot of what the 4477th got up to is still highly classified. It is known that in 1987 the USAF bought 12 new Shenyang F-7Bs (license built MiG-21s) from China, which I’d assume included spares as well. MiGs by and large were of relatively simple construction, so reverse engineering broken parts was another likely source, though the Wiki does mention that the CIA came through with spares (obtained from only God knows where or how) occasionally.

There are 13 former eastern block states in NATO. I’m sure if you offer a discount on an f-16, you’ll get a warehouse of cosmoline coated stuff.
